Poor Things is a 2023 period drama film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. The film features an ensemble cast including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef.
Set in 19th century Glasgow, the story follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman who is resurrected by a brilliant but eccentric scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Bella's rebirth sets off a chain of events that intertwines her life with those of Dr. Baxter, his protégé, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), and Bella's husband, Archibald "Archie" McCandless (Ramy Youssef).
The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 10-minute standing ovation. It has since been praised for its visually striking style, dark humor, and the performances of its lead actors. Poor Things currently holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 79/100 on Metacritic.
