Blade is a 1998 American superhero horror film directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It stars Wesley Snipes as the title character, a Dhampir (human-vampire hybrid) who fights vampires.
The film follows Blade as he battles the vampire Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), who seeks to become a god-like being by destroying the human race. Blade is assisted by his mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) and hematologist Karen Jenson (N'Bushe Wright).
Released on August 21, 1998, Blade was a box office success, grossing $131.2 million worldwide against a $45 million budget. While it received mixed reviews from critics, the film developed a cult following and is considered one of Snipes' signature roles.
Blade was noted for its dark, stylized take on the superhero genre and is credited with setting the stage for further comic book film adaptations. It spawned two sequels, Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2004), both written by Goyer.
