All of Us Strangers is a 2023 British romantic fantasy film written and directed by Andrew Haigh, based on the 1987 novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. The film stars Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell, and Claire Foy.
The story follows Adam (Andrew Scott), a lonely screenwriter in 1980s London who develops an intimate relationship with his mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal). As their bond deepens, Adam is haunted by memories of his past and finds himself drawn back to his childhood home and town, where he encounters his parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) alive and unchanged from the day they died in a car accident 30 years earlier.
The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in August 2023 to critical acclaim. It currently holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its "profound examination of grief and love through a fantastical lens that is always grounded on human emotion". Audiences have found the film deeply moving, with one reviewer describing it as "a heartbreaking story that portrays parental loss and queer identity".
All of Us Strangers has been recognized with several awards, including seven wins at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards. Its dreamlike exploration of memory, identity and the supernatural has left many viewers questioning the reliability of the narrator and the nature of reality itself.
