The Bikeriders (2024) is a crime drama film written and directed by Jeff Nichols, loosely based on the 1968 photography book of the same name by Danny Lyon. Set between 1965 and 1973, the film follows the rise and fall of a Midwestern motorcycle club called The Vandals.
The story is primarily told through the perspective of Kathy (Jodie Comer), a woman who falls in love with the club's most rebellious member, Benny (Austin Butler). The film explores themes of masculinity, violence, and the idealization of the biker lifestyle, as the club's founder, Johnny (Tom Hardy), tries to maintain control.
Despite strong performances from the lead actors, the film has been criticized for lacking a clear central narrative and failing to fully develop its themes. However, it has been praised for its stylish cinematography and ability to evoke the spirit of classic biker films like The Wild One and Easy Rider.
The Bikeriders premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and was originally slated for a 2023 theatrical release, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. It was finally released in theaters on June 21, 2024 to mixed reviews
