"Tears of the Sun" is a 2003 American action thriller film directed by Antoine Fuqua. It depicts a fictitious U.S. Navy SEAL team rescue mission amidst the 21st-century civil war in Nigeria.
Lieutenant A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis) commands the team sent to rescue U.S. citizen Dr. Lena Fiore Kendricks (Monica Bellucci) before the approaching rebels reach her jungle hospital. However, when Waters locates Kendricks, she refuses to leave her helpless patients to be slaughtered by the rebels.
The film received mixed reviews, with critics praising its attention to detail and sense of place, but criticizing its reliance on Hollywood action conventions and perceived one-sided portrayal of the conflict. Director Antoine Fuqua later expressed frustration that the film became more of an action movie than the important story about the people's plight that he had intended.
