Asoka is a 2001 Indian epic historical drama film directed by Santosh Sivan. It is a dramatized version of the early life of Emperor Asoka of the Maurya Empire, who ruled most of the Indian subcontinent in the 3rd century BCE.

The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as the titular character alongside Kareena Kapoor, Rahul Dev, Danny Denzongpa, and Ajith Kumar in a special appearance. It begins with Asoka's career as a General in Takshashila and ends with the bloody conquest of the Kalinga kingdom.

While on the run, Asoka meets and falls in love with Kaurwaki (Kareena Kapoor), who is revealed to be the Princess of Kalinga. After returning to his kingdom, Asoka wages a devastating war on Kalinga, leading to immense bloodshed and loss of life. This event transforms Asoka, who then renounces violence and embraces Buddhism.

Asoka was widely screened internationally and received positive reviews, especially for its cinematography by Santosh Sivan. At the 47th Filmfare Awards, it won Best Cinematography and received nominations for Best Film and Best Director.
